Privacy Policy for Westlaw Session Keeper
Privacy Policy — Westlaw Session Keeper
Last updated: September 2026
Westlaw Session Keeper ("the extension") is a Chrome extension that keeps your Westlaw research session active by detecting inactivity timeout warnings and automatically continuing your session. This policy explains what data the extension collects, how it's used, and what is never collected.
What the extension collects
Website content (from westlaw.com only): To detect Westlaw's inactivity timeout warning, the extension reads visible text on the current Westlaw page. Small excerpts of this (such as the text of a button it clicked, or a snippet of a detected dialog) are stored locally in your browser's storage as an activity log, capped at the last 50 entries. This data is never transmitted anywhere — it stays on your device and is only used to show you a history of activity inside the extension's own popup.
Extension settings: Your on/off toggle state, heartbeat toggle state, and custom detection keywords are stored locally and synced via Chrome's built-in sync storage (chrome.storage.sync), so your preferences carry over between your own devices if you're signed into Chrome.
License key: If you purchase a license after the free trial, the key you enter is sent to Gumroad's license verification API (api.gumroad.com) to confirm it was genuinely purchased. This is the only data this extension ever sends off your device on its own. Gumroad's handling of this data is governed by Gumroad's own privacy policy.
Install date and usage counters: The date you installed the extension, and simple counters (how many times a session was extended, how many errors occurred) are stored locally to support the free trial countdown and the optional "Report a Problem" feature.
What the extension does NOT collect
- No personally identifiable information (name, address, age, ID numbers)
- No health information
- No financial or payment information — all payment processing happens entirely on Gumroad's own site, never inside this extension
- No passwords, Westlaw login credentials, or authentication data of any kind
- No personal communications (emails, messages)
- No location or IP-based tracking
- No browsing history across other websites — the extension only ever runs on westlaw.com domains
- No mouse position, keystroke, or click logging of your real activity — the extension only performs its own automated clicks and simulated "heartbeat" events
The "Report a Problem" feature
The extension's popup includes an optional "Report a Problem" button. If you choose to use it, it opens a pre-filled Gmail compose window containing your typed description plus diagnostic information (extension version, install date, license status, activity counters, and recent activity log). Nothing is sent unless you personally review and click Send inside your own Gmail — the extension itself does not transmit this report.
Data retention and control
All locally stored data (activity log, settings, license status) remains on your device and is deleted automatically if you uninstall the extension. You can also clear it manually at any time via Chrome's extension storage settings.
Third-party services
This extension uses Gumroad (gumroad.com) solely to verify purchased license keys. No other third-party services, analytics, or advertising SDKs are integrated into this extension.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same URL with a revised "Last updated" date.
